FLOWERS

Animashaun Ameen

how do you say a prayer when

your mind is drowning in an ocean of guilt?

how do you search the heavens for salvation

when your voice is a plane too broken

to travel out of your throat?

teach me how to see through the skin of the sky

when flowers are growing in places my eyes used to be.

how to curl my tongue into praise and worship when

there is a man dying inside my stomach

and i do not know how to save him.

teach me how to stop my body from drowning

when there is a city full of broken things

growing in my bone.

//teach me how to breathe…

if graveyards are full of flowers,

then i think i know why these roses

are eating out the warmth

in my eyes.
