Icarus

Alyssa Asaro

We walked among the clouds

Before gravity pulled us down

Hands unclasped

We were silent for the fall

Not wanting to know how much of us would be left when we landed

And there wasn’t much

A loud crash turned crunch

We would’ve recoiled if they weren’t ours

Broken bones forcing us into strange conversation

“I can’t stand, can you?”

“I can withstand everything but you”

So we waited

For a sign or some help

Your face turned towards the sun

And my eyes trained on you

Both looking to Icarus to questions left hanging somewhere far above us

How did we get here

And how do we get back
